TETCOTT
LIFTON Sunday 15th May
2005
by Lee Glanville
Luck played a large part in
Astonaut's men's open win at the Tetcott point to point at Lifton
on Sunday. Guy Weatherley, currently second in the area men's title
chase was left in the lead when Jalon's Star (Ben Robarts) tried to
dip out, decided not to and the pair parted company at the last
fence. Weatherley looked to be celebrating when his whip flew up in
the air and he caught it coolly while galloping to the post but he
later admitted that it happened by accident and "racing whips cost
too much to lose these days!"
There was bad luck earlier in
the same race for title chase leader Richard Woollacott who was
making his move on Finewood, seeking a hat-trick of wins, only to
be all but floored by a blunder at the third last. Woollacott did
well to stay on board but he pulled Finewood up shortly
afterwards.
There were no fallers at all
during the day until the last race, the second division of the
maiden, when only Alazylady (Andrew Glassonbury) finished, all nine
of the others coming a cropper or pulling up.
There were only four runners in
the ladies' open, but all four were good'uns. Racegoers were
intrigued to see who would win out of Ross Oliver's recent
Cheltenham hunter chase winner, partnered by top lady rider Polly
Gundry and the Richard Barber trained, Rachel Green ridden Rimpton
Boy, a winner of four open races so far this season.
Tanya Newman made the running on
Salford until the closing stages when the two big guns went on.
Rimpton Boy prevailed, easing into a four length margin of victory
at the line.
Jennifer Congdon had a point to
prove to her boyfriend Liam Burns and did it in style, winning the
Confined Hunts race from the front on Possible Pardon. Congdon had
two second places on the horse before Burns won on him last time
out. "Possible Pardon is a bit of a monkey and has to be give a
positive ride. To be fair he did run on well when he was
challenged," she said.
The Restricted saw a good win
for Rebecca Welch's Gunner's Mistake. Rebecca trains the horse near
Dartington, Totnes and he was given a fine ride by Darren Edwards.
"Will Biddick gave him a great ride when he was second at Flete so
we knew he was well," she said. Helen Stoneman's Lady Wurzel was
second.
Dionysian (D Jacobs) had run
well at Cotley on Bank Holiday Monday and won the first division of
the a competitive maiden well from Slippery Friend (R Darke) who
has been placed on all five runs this season and must surely win
soon. Russell Ross won the hunt race on the Linda Blackford Some
Tool, following up from his previous day's success on the same
trainer's Canada at Holnicote.
