The Old Raby Hunt Club got the Yorkshire season underway with a meeting packed with thrills, spills, great racing and an air show to boot.

The opening event saw thirteen go to post in the Old Raby Members Race packed with thrills. After just jumping four fences, the field was cut down to half and the loose horses run amok. Queenies Girl fell at the first in the straight and almost brought Carew down, who was having his first run for John Mackley, who bought him from Chris Grant. As the race turned for home, Lothian Rising looked the winner with Carew held up in fourth place. Winnie Wild was running on and was joined by Carew, who took up the running going to the last and went on under a good ride by Lee Bates. King Bloom  (ex Mary Reveley - now owned by local vet Graham Russ) caught the eye and should be winning soon.

Left - Carew (Lee Bates) - 1st

Intermediate
The story of this race was set around the main ring when Just Fluster reared up and threw his jockey to the ground and then rolled on top of him. It looked bad and later on was taken to hospital by the air ambulance .The race itself saw a great ride from Serena Brotherton on Mister Bromley who jumped from fence to fence going clear to win by 12 lengths from High Fields who seemed to not like the going early on in the race. John Rich, evens at the start of the betting, drifted out to 5/1, eventually finishing third.

Right - Mister Bromley (Serena Brotherton) - 1st

Ladies Open
Texas Ranger give a display of sheer class. Jo Foster had the 7-year-old jumping brilliantly from fence one. Ardmayle was the only one who could stay with Texas Ranger until Jo Foster released the handbrake on this brilliant horse who went clear from the brave Ardmayle. San Francisco running in a ladies race for the first time stayed on for 3rd place and should come on the race.

Left - Ardmayle (Lucy Coney) - 2nd

Mens Open
Cimarrone Cove lead the field to the first with Whitley Grange Boy a half length behind Mademist Sam running in 3 rd. Ben From Ketton was held up in mid division and all the while Ben Woodhouse had Mr Mahdlo cruising along. Mademist Sam took over at the front going out into the country for the last time from Whitley Grange Boy, who was clearly enjoying himself. Torn Silk was never going. Chaos Theory was making headway from four out as was Ben From Ketton, but going to the last Mr Mahdlo went clear to record Ben Woodhouse’s first winner of the day. Chaos Theory stayed on for second with Ben From Ketton getting up for third.

Right - Torn Silk (Clive Mulhall) - Pulled Up

Restricted
Alnwick winner Floritchel made a visit to Yorkshire and ran well in a bigger field than when winning two weeks ago. He was in with a chance until hitting four out Ben Woodhouse recorded his second winner of the day on the big grey mare Auntie Kathleen, who looks like she’ll be winning again soon. Flat Stanley ran well enough to take second place from Hellodock. Cmewin, a winner at Cottenham and a good third at Alnwick, had the Yorkshire champion Nigel Tutty in the saddle but never seem to like the going and was pushed along for most of the race.

Left - Cmewin (Nigel Tutty) - unplaced

Open Maiden Division One
Money came for Caimins Well but he was never going. Supreme Optimist took them along and was still in there with three to jump along Supreme Vintage, Milliners Guide and the fast finishing Rising Talisker, who lead over the last, but Supreme Vintage came back on the run in under a strong drive from Ben Woodhouse to catch Rising Talisker on the line.

Open Maiden Division Two
All eyes were on the red-hot jolly Castleford, who looked the winner until falling at the last which left Ellie Bee clear to record a four-timer for Ben Woodhouse. One to watch out for when he gets his jumping together is Mrs S Franks Tango Bojangles.
