Saint Romble memorable
again for Hobbs
Saint Romble provided Diana Hobbs with her
first success in the Club member’s race, mirroring the
achievement of her sister Katherine in 2005. The five time 2005
winner chased the long time leader Bak on Board (Charlotte Tizzard)
and jumping three out there were three challenging for the lead,
the later two and Polka (Darren Edwards). Saint Romble showed his
class by jumping to the lead two out, under his competent pilot, to
sprint clear from Bak on Board to win by ten lengths in a fast time
of 6.08 minutes. Saint Romble is certainly a horse that the Hobbs
team will cherish, giving both daughters, Diana and Katherine,
their first point-to-point winners. Future success for the
partnership looks imminent and he could next be seen in ladies
opens, third first time out this season to Rimpton Boy at Barbury
Castle in a ladies race, as he outclassed this field.
The mixed open saw Diana Hobbs first ride on
her old favourite Waverock but could only manage second, however
the race was one by another Sarah Hobbs owned horse in Orswell
Crest and Josh Guerriero winning on his first point to point ride.
Josh, who works for Hobbs, was hard at work for most of the race
behind the front handy Waverock until he came through to lead two
out to sprint away from Waverock to win by five lengths.
Thirteen-year-old Ballinarrid (Michael Miller) showed up for a long
way but the winner had more class than his rivals. Marie McGuiness,
who does a lot of pre-training work for the Hobbs team, was the
winning trainer. Winning rider Josh looked competent and could do
well if getting the opportunities.
Local favourite Jabiru (Darren Edwards) won
the opening hunts race from single opponent Royal Predica (Guy
Weatherley) in a cat and mouse affair where the race started in
earnest two out with Jabiru just holding on at the line.
Thirteen-year-old Jabiru is a credit to connections as he has now
won this corresponding race five times alongside his ten other
successes.
The Intermediate saw Charlotte Tizzard give
the Staverton Owners group’s Soul King a powerful front
running ride to out battle welsh raider Buckland Boy (William
Oakes). Handy throughout Tizzard increased her lead two out,
already hard at work, and just held on from the closing Buckland
Boy to win by a length. The second just failed and showed up well
after missing last season, he will be worth watching in the
Wales/West country area this season.
The restricted race was won in determined
style Killarney prince and Tom Mann. The seven year old had won a
2m4f maiden at Barbury Castle after front running and attempted to
do the same here. At one stage he was thirty five lengths clear on
the second circuit but defeat looked ominous when Beggars Brook
(Michael Miller), another maiden winner this term, loomed up two
out to take the initiative. But Beggars Brook, same owner as
Kingscliff, jumped the last ahead only to attempt to run out and
stop to a walk allowing Tom Mann and Killarney Prince to battle
back on the inside to win by two lengths. The winner may have been
fortunate but did battle on well even when headed, he looks a
likely improver. The second had the race won but showed little
resolution in the finish, his turn should come soon. The third
another Welsh raider Kings Euro (William Oakes), same connections
as Buckland Boy, ran on well to finish a four length third after
being a long way back and can build upon his maiden win in
2005.
The first two divisions of the maiden saw
Isabel Thompsett gain her first double, in a series of eventful
races. The first division saw the front running Frenni Girl,
trained in Wales, finish in isolation from the only other finisher
Rickham Glory (Martin Sweetland), which was about two fences behind
the winner. Initially first time out Moselee (Richard Shute)
didn’t start well then ran out, Dungolly (N.Childs) dumped
his jockey, and Hotfoot Harry (David Turner) ran out on the second
circuit when challenging for the lead, leaving Frenni Girl to
cruise home. The winner did jump well but may find it hard stepping
up in class.
The second division went to another Welsh
raider in Ghost Buster, who had an easier task when the odds-on
favourite Fille Détente (Charlotte Tizzard), who jumped of
well unlike at Black Forest Lodge, fell when beginning to weaken on
the second circuit. The winner had shown promise under rules and
first time out at Heythrop and had no problems in coming home alone
in there own time. Thompsett’s second winner gave her the
accolade of rider of the meeting. Thompsett does well with her
limited opportunities and looks to be building the foundations for
a successful season.
The third division of the maiden saw a double
Marie McGuiness, successful with Orswell Crest in the open, with an
above average looking Long Night (Richard Wollacott) who sprinted
well clear after being joined by two rivals three out. The winner
was well thought of for Phillip Hobbs but was fragile, he seems an
above average maiden winner and won as he liked. He will be worth
following when stepped up in grade. The placed horses Great Game
(M.Munrowd) and first time out Vics pride (Charlotte Tizzard) look
capable of winning maidens this term after showing up well against
a good winner.
