South Devon
Ideford Arch
Saturday 9th February 2008
by Granville Taylor

THE going was on the soft side at Ideford Arch for the South Devon fixture where Rhys Flint, 16, achieved his first double with Lady Myfanwy and Iris’s Prince. The promising young jockey is one of the best new talents on the circuit this season and the double took him closer to his quest to win the national novice title.

Lady Myfanwy completed her seasonal hat trick for the season in the PPORA Novice Riders’ event before Iris’s Prince just got the better of Jalons Star to win the Mixed Open. The nine-year-old Iris’s Prince is owned by the young rider and trained by his mother Martine near Bridgend. She explained that Iris’s Prince “had been a bit flat” earlier this year, but was “firing this week and should improve again”, adding that, “he needs a stiff track and big fences”.

Simon’s Seat landed the odds in the Intermediate at the main expense of No Way A Lady. Nick Scholfield gave the winner a confident ride. “I took a pull approaching the last and just popped it to make sure,” he said.

Kiwi Rap ran on gamely in a driving finish to land the Restricted from Throwaround, with Kingsmill Lake finishing a close third. Kiwi Rap was the third win of her career for 21-year-old Catherine Atkinson, who is in her final year at Bristol University. Catherine shares the rides on the Cattistock qualified gelding with her brother Martin.

There was an even closer finish to the first two and a half miles Maiden when both jockeys Stuart Payne and Charlotte Tizzard thought they had won. Peggy’s Boy was awarded the verdict by a head to give 21-year-old Stuart Payne a quick follow up success to his first winner at Wadebridge last week.

Ha Ho Magregor was a clear cut winner of the other section in a faster time. The six-year-old drew away from his rivals in the hands of 22-year-old Suzy Berry, who also trains the lightly raced ex- Irish gelding for her father Tony near Taunton. Suzy has recently gained a Bsc in animal science at Reading University and combines her training at home with riding out for Caroline Keevil and Marie McGuinness.

The concluding Open Maiden was split on the day. My Big Sister and Will White won the first part convincingly, and Sir Grenville provided a first winner for his Moretonhampstead-based trainer Gail Haywood with her first ever runner in the other section. Gail acts as a part time secretary to North Devon trainer Victor Dartnall, and 16-year-old Ed Glassonbury, who was partnering his first winner, also works in that yard.

Mister Club Royal outclassed his three opponents in the Hunt race to give Mark Munrowd his first success of the season. The 12-year-old, who is trained at Hennock, near Chudleigh by Emma Oliver for her father Roger is likely to tackle Hunter chases in the spring.
