South Notts
Thorpe Lodge
Easter Monday 24th March 2008
by Emma Forman

Steve Magee was the man in form at the South Notts point to point with a double starting with Farmer Frank who was an impressive 15 length winner of the Hunt Member’s race for owner Roger Jackson. Farmer Frank is trained by Nick Kent and still only a five year old, he is highly regarded by his stable and should be a good thing when he progresses to Restricted company.

Magee’s second winner was the even money favourite Ski Dazzle in the 5,6 & 7year old maiden race. Magee was deputising for Miles Seston who was taken to hospital with a suspected broken ankle and leg following a fall in the second race. The second horse Pennytino having only her second start was beaten by five lengths and looks like one to watch out for when she next runs.

Ski Dazzle was one leg of a treble for trainer Antonia Bealby from Barrowby and she also won the Restricted race with Dream Garden partnered by Matthew Mackley. Dream Garden is a promising 5 year old who won his Maiden at Thorpe in good style back in January and looks set to go on to better things.

Mrs Bealby’s other winner came in the Ladies race when 5-4 favourite Rainbow Tree followed up his third place last week at the Brocklesby by getting the better of Ballyalbert.

The Bealby yard could have had a four timer as their Farmer Tom was going well in the final maiden before being brought down. This race was won by Matt Briggs who works as head lad for Antonia Bealby’s husband Chris, riding Return Fire. This horse made all to give Briggs his first winner of the season.

The biggest field of the day was in the Confined race with 11 runners going to post. The race was won by Richard Hunnisett riding his own Harapour trained by Gerald Bailey who also had a winner at Marks Tey with Round The Isles. Persian Hero, also from the Bailey yard went off favourite for the Men’s Open race but found Tender Tangle too good for him. Tender Tangle was ridden by Stuart Morris who celebrated his 30 th birthday at the weekend.

The next Point to Point in the Midlands Area is the Belvoir meeting at Garthorpe on Saturday 29 th March, first race is at 1.30pm.
