Quorn
Garthorpe
Sunday 27th April 2008
by Graham Taylor

With ground conditions up to expectations, a large sized crowd turned out to see some exciting racing when the Quorn Hunt held their Point to Point meeting here at Garthorpe on Sunday. Two Pony races preceeded the Point to Point racing and these produced wins for Crosswell Robbie, ridden by Alex Chadwick and the George Saunders ridden, Chiumbo.

The Quorn Hunt Members Race, kindly sponsored by Mr & Mrs Harold Morton, got the meeting under way and this was won by the Roger Harvey trained Return Fire, ridden by Matt Briggs. Leading virtually from flag fall, the nine year old just held on to beat the Patrick Millington ridden, Cyrium, with Borris taking third place.

The Mens Open Race, run over a distance of 3 ½ miles, attracted a field of eight and this was sponsored by Mr & Mrs P.Hewitt and Mr & Mrs J. Bealby. This produced a fine win for the Gerald Bailey trained, Denvale. Ridden by owner, Richard Hunnisett, the gelding gave a fine display of jumping and had too much pace for Teeton Bollinger and Eskimo Pie who took the minor placings. The winner here is now eligible to run in the £10,000 3m ½f Volkswagen Touareg Championship Hunter Chase Final, to take place at Towcester in May.

Robert Whowell & Partners, the Chartered Accountants, sponsored Race Three, The Ladies Open Race, and here six went to post. The Jill Dawson ridden, Vingis Park, went off the well supported favourite and led for most of the journey. However, Pirate Flagship, came through with a well timed run, to win by a neck at the line. Outsider, Stormy Sunrise took third spot.

Ten entries went to post for the Open Maiden Race, run over 2 ½ miles and kindly sponsored by Six Hills Leisure Park. This produced the first leg of a double for Blacksmith, Andy Martin. He had six year old, Oranger, well placed and won with a bit in hand from favourite, Watchthespace and Kingston Heath, who took second and third.

Savills of Nottinham sponsored the Restricted Race and nine horses went to post. This race produced the fastest time of the day and completed a double for jockey Andy Martin. His mount, It’s Missy Imp, came late on the scene to snatch victory from the well supported, Jubilee George. The John Docker trained, Tanners Hall took third place.

Eleven horses went to post for the final race on the card, The Open Maiden Race, and William Hercock kindly sponsored here. This resulted in a win for joint favourite, Iphar, ridden by David Maxwell. The ex-French chaser went clear three fences from home to beat Magicastle and Seaplace, who took the minor placings.

Two Charity Flat races took place, immediately after the final Point to Point.

Next local Midland Area Point to Point is the Fernie Hunt, which is to take place at Dingley, near Market Harborough on Sunday, 4 th May.
