Zetland
Witton Castle
Monday 3rd May 2010
by Will Milburn

The Zetland received an excellent days racing, with some top horses and jockeys on display, one of which been Anna Dawson who managed to notch up a double.

She started aboard the Sarah Horner trained Ajay who was bought at Doncaster sales last season. Coming from behind Anna went clear after the last to win well aboard this quirky individual, but Anna got a good tune out of him here. Saddlers Singer was second but the eye catcher was the 4yo Blaney Bouncer who was tenderly handled back in third.

Anna completed her double aboard course specialist Lutin Du Moulin who was leading five out and could never be caught as Anna drove her mount out and looks equally as good as her two brothers. Andre Chenier is a model of consistency for Charlotte Cundall after finishing second again, whilst Nawaadi who came from well off the pace to finish third.

Cottam Phantom continued his upward progress by taking the Intermediate for Jacqueline and Cherry Coward. The pair made most of the running at a steady pace, which then allowed them to sprint clear towards the finish and win well. Distant Memory was confidently ridden by Simon Walker, who stayed on strongly from the back, whilst Dannymalone ran on into third.

There was a huge upset in the Restricted as 20-1 shot Go Moss Go won. Partnered with Mark Walford the pair were leading into the straight and could never be caught. Three pulled ups were explained by the lack of decent ground for Go Moss Go and won here with faster conditions to suit. Hunt Ball was the only challenger out of the main pack back in second, with Celestial in third.

Another promising young rider that won on the day was Michael Ennis who won Divison 2 of the Open Maiden race aboard Barry Wharfs Marfleet. The 10yo came on leaps and bounds for a disappointing run previously at Fife which allowed Marfleet to stay on extra well from the rear as he swooped past his opposition in the straight under an excellent ride from Ennis. This was Michaels seventh career win and now hopes to have a good shot at winning the National Novice title. The Masters Lesson travelled powerfully into the race but found little, whilst Max And Mix was third.

Division 1 went to the Chris Dawson trained and ridden Chapman’s Peak who after always been prominent, powered away after the last to give favourite backers a winner. The winner was owned by several of Chris’s school friends who also had a winner at this meeting in previous seasons. Atlantic Shot travelled very well into the race and should have a win in him, whilst Gafferdy Lane ran his best race to date.

There was a big turn up in the Mens Open as hot favourite Sonevafushi, who usually dominates through his races, was always pestered for the lead by Doris’s Gift and The Stickler, with the latter taking the favourite on in the straight and after a long battle resulted in a dead heat. However Sonevafushi was subsequently demoted after been found to cause interference. The Stickler was previously trained by Richard Guest until unfortunately breaking down, John Holdroyd was advised by several vets to have the horse put down, however decided to give the gelding to the Smith family who have since nursed him back to health.
